4. Realms, Realities, & Afterlives

  • Alternate realities exist, but their involvement with Earth as known by humans is minimal and rare. The nature of the Veil serves as an insulator, preventing large-scale incursion. However some do still manage to slip through: individuals from alternate timelines and other worlds sometimes find themselves on Earth, forced to hide themselves from the world at large. Much like with Aliens, these individuals generally fall in with supernatural communities regardless of whether or not they'd be considered traditionally supernatural in nature since they may find it more difficult to blend in otherwise.

Realms, on the other hand, are not alternate realities. These can be seen as other parts of the same reality that Earth is located in, connected in a variety of ways. Fae courts are realms of their own, as are things more traditionally associated with death like various afterlives. Life after death is messy and convoluted, but most people end up going to an afterlife they believe in.

Travel from an alternate reality is almost exclusively one way, while some realms do allow for back and forth travel. However the fundamental nature of Earth compared to its realms tends to be significantly different, leading to issues with transit. Many realms—including most afterlives—require their occupants to incarnate into a physical form in order to move around on Earth, preventing them from easily moving back and forth.
