Setting & Premise

  • Starlit Avenue is set in Polaris Pass, a small town an hour and a half outside of Portland, Oregon. Overlooking North Star Lake, Polaris Pass is a popular destination for tourists, both for its natural splendor and for its unusually spooky reputation.

The setting for Starlit Avenue is a reality similar to our own, paralleling modern Earth in many ways. The site does not, however, directly reflect all major world events; the COVID-19 pandemic never happened, and any other major news stories of the day don't generally make an appearance. For ease of RP, the drinking age is set at eighteen, and both sex work and drugs have been decriminalized but not necessarily legalized.

Also of note, we operate on a lower scale of power than some other modern and urban fantasy settings do. Gods are old and diminished, and while a vampire can outclass a human in a contest of raw strength or speed, humanity is not so overshadowed by the powers of the supernatural that they cannot defend themselves if they know what they are up against. The secrecy maintained by the Veil protects the supernatural from humanity just as much as the inverse is true.

Polaris Pass is located in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, in a heavily forested and very rocky area. Home to approximately twenty-five thousand people, and hosting a significant number of tourists during the summer months, the town rings the southern edge of the lake, overlooking white-sand beaches that serve as a major draw.

To the northwest is a major highway, which passes through the edge of town before turning south at Fool's Creek. The creek serves as a natural divider, separating the bulk of the town from the smaller community of Aurum Heights located on the east side of town. With only one bridge across the water, Aurum Heights Residential Community is naturally insulated, ringed by steep mountain on all sides.

Having been built up over the years, the town is a patchwork of smaller communities and neighborhoods where residential, business, and public land all can be found sitting side by side. Notable landmarks include The Haunt, a bar operating out of the town's original post office, The Last Stop, a community center with a historical bent, and the eternally famous Staircase to Nowhere.

The surrounding hills are rarely explored, and generally hiking and other activities are considered to be ill-advised due to the area's many abandoned mines. Those who are interested in outdoor activities are encouraged to head to the northern tip of the lake, where a small outpost has been set up to serve those wishing to hike up the nearby Mount Carlos, the largest peak in the area.
