2. The Veil

The Veil is a supernatural force that covers the Earth, hiding the supernatural from humanity at large. For the most part, it simply disguises any supernatural elements from unaware humans. A demon with horns would be viewed by an unawakened human as simply a person, no horns present. Meanwhile a dragon flying overhead might be mistaken by all unawakened humans as an airplane.

The Veil also writes over memories of events in the minds of unawakened humans, giving them 'logical' explanations for thoroughly supernatural events. Similarly, it prevents simple accidents that might cause suspicion, primarily by having unawakened humans naturally avoid anything that might be hidden from them.

However, when something happens that the Veil struggles to contain—such as the usage of abilities that the Veil finds difficult to reconcile with reality as humanity knows it—nearby humans may catch glimpses of the truth. Small exposures result in awakening humans, who are more prone to seeing the truth than the average unawakened human. Larger ones—ones that the Veil cannot possibly hope to disguise—result in awakened humans, who can no longer perceive the Veil at all. While some awakening humans will eventually revert to being unawakened, once someone has fully seen past the Veil, there's no going back.

The Veil is not strictly enforced, as there is no overarching political structure that standardizes how each hidden supernatural community operates. It is up to each community to decide how to handle such breaches in their secret existence. It is generally understood however that humanity at large discovering the existence of the supernatural would be a negative thing, leading to some taking the enforcement of the Veil into their own hands.
