Personality

Echo of a Girl: In many ways, Nell is still the same person she was in life. She is still musical, thoughtful, and deeply kind. She still enjoys speaking with others, learning their stories, and being among crowds of people. Just as in life, Nell is happiest when she isn’t talking about herself. She loves laughing, and sunlight, and swimming… 80s fashion and music, the taste of vanilla…holding hands with girls (and sometimes boys). However, Nell has been “asleep” for a long time, and she is still relearning how to be herself again.

Lost, Searching: Nell is untethered in every way. She has no home, no possessions— no body, in more ways than one. She is lost and yearning for something, someone, to connect to. She wants stability, and friendship, and a reprieve from the feeling that she is forgetting something terrible and important.

Restless Spirit: For the most part, Nell exists in a normal-to-drifty stasis. However, certain happenings, sensory inputs, and conversation topics may spark a… change. Things that strike her too closely of who she was, how she died, or certain events following her death, are liable to leave her “inexplicably” moody and even volatile, potentially even to the point of violence and temporary rejection of self-awareness.

Additional Information
Annelise frequently falls off the radar for up to days at a time, and has dream-like few-to-no dreamlike recollections of these periods. She tends to drift aimlessly and instinctually, in a trance-like state, usually intangible and camouflaged. Or, she may simply sit in one place for long periods of time.

Also— I’m trying to play with the common trope of ghosts not knowing they’re dead, while still creating a playable character who’s trope won’t immediately dissolve. So, inspired by this lore, Nell is essentially protected by her own personal “veil.” If answering certain direct questions, she may give information from life, or even disengage from more demanding conversations, with little memory of doing so. She routinely “forgets” her wallet, etc. Nell won’t really process or remember a lot of this, and it would take a lot to crack her denial.

Core Advantage
Watashi Wa Mou Shindeiru
In addition to the benefits of the Unliving advantage, it is also significantly harder to “kill” Nell, considering she is already dead. She can only be truly injured/killed/banished by: reaper/soul/mind damage, direct attacks from other intangible beings (when also intangible), incorporeal fire, exorcism/ritual, or true name banishment. Her physical form can be “wounded” normally, but, while painful, these are essentially aesthetic and disappear at 3:37AM every night.
Core Disadvantage
Tether:
In lieu of losing her previous anchor, Nell’s grip on her humanity is tethered to the health of her flute. Damage temporarily weakens this grip until it is magically repaired at 3:37AM. If the flute is destroyed, Nell will permanently lose her grip on her identity, humanity, etc, and become little more than a cluster of lost, vengeful energy — a fate worse than soul death itself.
Bonus
Swan Song:
Nell’s only memento from life is a ghostly silver flute. She can summon it at will, though she experiences a mild amnesic effect surrounding this, and is able to match the flute to her form (physical vs incorporeal vs camouflage, etc). The sound of her flute, during the night, creates a weak, breakable mesmerizing effect on listeners, as well as immense sorrow and a mild urge to follow the sound.
Nerfs and Flavor
Cosmetic Shifting Flavor: Nell’s “true form” is a more ghastly version of herself, usually paired with Intangible.
In it, her skin is deathly pale/bluish and hair has gone a dull off-white. Covered in illusory dirt/blood/bruises/burns and evidence of violent undeath. Empty pits for eyes, and has major head and neck wounds. This form also displays itself in shreds of a dark blue/black prom gown, and a black prom tiara.

Intangible: Those in her immediate vicinity may register a chill in the air, and within themselves if she passes through.

Moonbound: Essentially loses her grip on her sense of self, returning to poltergeisty behavior. Typically only reacts to or shows herself to those who have encroached on her chosen “territory” of the night, usually somewhere she frequented in life.

Registers as dead, to those who can sense it.

History

Date of Birth
Born January 12th, 1966 & Died Tuesday, May 15th, 1984
Place of Birth
Polaris Pass, Oregon, USA
Meta-Knowledge:
Annelise Valeria Bellefiore was a Polaris Pass native, born to two successful classical musicians. She gained brief national recognition, and lasting professional recognition, as a flute-playing child prodigy. Following several months of secret stalking, and shortly after being crowned Prom Queen, Nell fled her senior prom and promptly disappeared, never seen again. It made national news, and was furthered by a scandal ignited when Annelise’s best friend revealed she’d rejected Nell (whom had a boyfriend) earlier that night. However, despite the heat, no convictions were ever made, and the only concrete evidence was a single human molar found towns away. The case was eventually marked inactive, and is still an occasional talking point for cold case enthusiasts, local spooksters, etc.

What Nell Knows:
After a gruesome death, Nell became tethered to the place she died and was laid to rest beneath — an old Victorian-style mansion, abandoned on a secluded estate between Salem and Polaris Pass. She existed as a half-sapient, vengeful poltergeist for forty years, terrorizing potential buyers and delinquent trespassers, and otherwise maintaining a quiet existence. Who she was, and how she died, were jumbled and fleeting memories, and her actions were fueled more by instinctual vengeance than any true sense of self.

The sudden bulldozing of her resting place destroyed her tether, however, as well as any solid memories of her time as a house haunt… And yet, freedom from that dark place has reawakened missing pieces of her. Nell now exists as a lost soul, unknowingly pulled back to her hometown in her search for something to cling to. Her memories of her life, her vengeance, and even her very identity are still jumbled and fleeting, and she both is and isn’t aware that she’s dead… Denial is powerful, after all, especially in the case of wandering souls.
