Other: In her hybrid form, Malina is far more muscular and grows to about 8'6" fully upright. She is covered in fur and has a wolflike head with wicked fangs. Her hands become much larger and gain sharp, tough claws. She gains a tail. Her fur is mainly black, with accents of white and dark grey - all healthy and even except where interrupted by scars on her neck, shoulders, face, and left arm.

SECTION THREE: Personality
Straightforward - Malina is frank and pragmatic. She calls things as she sees them. If she sees a need for it, she won't shy away from ruffling someone's feathers.
She's Been Around - Malina has the kind of calm and confidence that can only come from experience, and she's experienced a lot in 280 years. It always seems like she knows how to handle whatever kind of situation she runs into, no matter how crazy.
Slow to Trust - Malina tends to have cynical views on people she doesn't already know and like.

Quirk: If she has a couple drinks in her she'll complain about imperialism and manifest destiny, and might forget what century it is.

Core Ability: - One With the Forest - Malina can teleport between any two living trees that she knows about within a mile of each other. In order to do this, she must touch one of the trees, and she cannot be directly observed by any sapient being. There must also be a side of her destination tree which is not being observed, or else the ability will fail.

She can take someone else with her, but if they're conscious, the sudden change of scenery must be seamless to their senses. She has to be carrying them, they must keep their eyes closed, and both locations must either be quiet or experiencing very similar sounds - if a breeze is rustling leaves in one location but not the other, it won't work. If one location has much more light than the other, her passenger needs to have their eyes covered.

  • Was the first blood wolf born during Tasha's reign as Alpha
  • Restless and curious when she was a young boy. Often joining her packmates when they met with Native American tribes, she was fascinated by some gender-nonconforming people she met from these groups.
  • One day after the pack moved to Oregon, she went missing for a week. When she returned, she looked like a woman. She had been in the realm of the fae and saved the life of a fae prince. In return the fae granted her several boons, including one of her innermost desires - a feminine appearance. It was around this time that she adopted the name Malina. Not all of the pack were happy about it, but between her blood wolf status and Tasha having Malina's back, they generally stayed in line.
  • Malina got her scars in 1928. She had been dating one of the newly-turned werewolves, Dennis - and it ended very poorly when Dennis learned Malina was 'not a real woman' and 'some kind of [homosexual].' Dennis and one of his stray friends later ambushed her. She barely survived. Dennis and his accomplice faced punishment and exile.
  • Malina has been a forest ranger since the 1980s, working primarily around the Polaris Pass area. Her position as a ranger has been very useful to the pack on many occasions.
additional info - she has an old 1998 Jeep which is still in good condition. It is well maintained and rarely sees use.

Trait Two: Divine Confidence - Riley is a literal god incarnate among mortals, and she knows this. She thinks that she has, or will have, the power, wisdom, and determination to solve almost any kind of problem. This is a core part of her identity. It often borders on hubris.

Trait Three: Righteous - Riley has strong moral convictions, and she does her best to live them.

Quirk: Intense opinions about political issues, especially regarding police, capitalism, and imperialism.

Core Advantage: Explosions: Riley can generate fiery explosions within 8 meters of herself. She can control both the shape and intensity of the blast. One of her strongest concentrated blasts could punch a hole clean through a reinforced concrete wall. Her strongest undirected blast could knock over a car. These explosions are not as loud as they should be - often sounding less like a bomb going off and more like a firecracker. Still noticeable and startling, but not so loud that one needs earplugs to avoid hearing loss.

Riley cannot be harmed by her own explosions. However, she can intentionally point a concentrated one at herself to propel herself through the air - this is difficult to control, and while the blast itself wouldn't hurt her, she could still collide with something.

When she is about to use this ability, her eyes glow. She can also make her eyes glow without using this ability.

History:

Riley had started speaking in full, articulate sentences by the time she was 18 months old. This was, of course, very strange. Stranger still were the things she'd revealed to them - including the fact that the vivid, shared dreams her parents had before her birth were prophetic, and that she was the reincarnation of a god most mortals had forgotten. She asked them to keep her true nature secret, and she gradually awakened them to the existence of the supernatural.

Riley did not retain much of her memories from her past lives. She could speak old dialects of languages like Chinese and Russian. and she knew eerily specific details about wars that ended centuries ago. By three years old, she had started talking with her parents about ethical philosophy, history, and current events. Some of her lessons rubbed off on her father - who worked for the Pentagon.

When she was nine years old, there was a raid on her home. Riley still doesn't know a lot of details - only that her father had commit some type of crime against the country, and that her parents were both killed in that raid.

The only close relative of hers who could take her in was her uncle - a war veteran with a drinking problem who lived halfway across the country in Oregon. He tried his best, but it was clear from early on that it wasn't going to work out. Riley actually convinced him to give her up to the foster care system voluntarily.

Her foster family has been more than supportive and understanding. Exemplary, even. They helped her attend True North Academy, which she got into on scholarship. She has excelled academically. In her junior year, she became class president.

Trait One: Underhanded - one doesn't survive feeding off of people for as long as she has without being clever. Rose knows how to trick, misdirect, and deceive, and she exercises this often. She'll even believe her own lies if they flatter her enough.
Trait Two: High self-esteem - Rose is looking out for number 1 at all times (herself). She sees this as a virtue, and views a refusal to do so as a sort of weakness.
Trait Three: Driven - when Rose wants something done, she knows how to use her wealth, power, and abilities to get it done. Once she gets on course to do something, it can be very difficult to shake her off course.

Nerfs / Flavor: When in her intangible form, Rose seems to turn into mist. She can float her way through cracks, but not airtight barriers.

Core Ability:
Advanced Hypnosis - Rose has a highly potent and versatile form of mind control available to her. Along with having the same Mesmer ability enjoyed by some vampires, if Rose makes uninterrupted eye contact with somebody for about ten seconds, she can place them in a deep hypnotic trance. Someone under Rose's spell becomes highly relaxed, pacified, and suggestible. They find it difficult to move unless instructed to do so, and often need to sit or lay down if not already doing so.

If Rose is able to spend uninterrupted time alone with a tranced subject, she can alter their minds in a number of ways. She does this by slowly, calmly talking them through whatever changes she would like to make. Changes that only take effect during trance are very easy to accomplish, while changes that continue to affect her subject after trance will take time, repetition, and gentle erosion of mental barriers if her victim is unwilling. Examples of what this can achieve include:
  • Erode Mental Barriers: Rose can make new or unwilling subjects more susceptible to her suggestions. This takes time, and becomes more effective with repeated exposure.
  • Sensations and Hallucinations: Rose can cause her subject to see, feel, hear, and experience things she describes to them while in trance.
  • Install Triggers: Rose can essentially program a subject's mind to give an unusual response to certain kinds of situations or stimuli outside of trance. For example - "When you feel my teeth break your skin, you will feel intense pleasure," or "If I tell you 'that's a bold fashion statement,' you will believe that your clothes have disappeared, leaving you completely naked. They will only reappear once you reach a place where nobody can see you.'" The more complicated the trigger, the more easily its effects can be resisted outside of trance.
  • Alter Memories: Rose often makes her subjects forget everything during and just before their trance. These memories can re-emerge if the subject is exposed to something that jogs their memory, or if they are asked specifically to account for the time they had been in trance. Even then, it may only come back in pieces.
  • Un-Awaken: With time and effort, Rose can use her hypnosis to reverse the awakening process on a recently awakened human. This involves convincing them they had a mental break of some kind.
Jostling, loud noises, and direct physical harm can jolt a subject out of their trance if Rose does not take time to prepare her subject for them. If somebody else is present to talk over Rose while she hypnotizes a subject, her efforts will be thwarted and the subject may end up getting awakened. If Rose is not actively hypnotizing somebody, they should awaken from their trance on their own within 5 minutes to an hour, depending on how deep they had gone.

  • Turned into a vampire by one of her fellow suffragettes, who was also her lover for many years
  • married a rich man and bled him dry (both literally and figuratively - doctors never figured out why he died)
  • Managed her inherited wealth well.
  • Moved west after a vampire hunter killed her former lover, who turned her.
  • Has since become a fixture in the economies of Portland and Polaris Pass.
  • Has kept people under her spell as personal servants for a long time. After the most recent one had to retire, she decided to try replacing them with one of those nek0s she had heard about - not having a family or people to miss them made the arrangement much more sustainable. After two years of NEK0 ownership, her resourcefulness earned her position as the head of the NOA.

additional info: all the residents at her properties have signed contracts which give her permission to enter their homes at any time. She is also the leader of the secretive NEK0 owners' association.

can be satisfied when others are envious of her, or when she engages in a spiteful act. If she goes too long without 'feeding' like this, she may have an hours-long episode feeling intense envy for others, which will ruin her day.

Core Ability:
Madeline can create illusions up to 50 meters away, if she has a clear line of sight. Her illusions affect both sight and hearing, and can make any sound or take on any appearance she likes. Within 10 meters, her illusions even feel real, though they cannot directly cause harm.

Illusions require focus to maintain, especially when they're complicated. Multitasking can be difficult, and distractions can lead to the illusions distorting, flickering, or being entirely dispelled.

Illusions that she makes from farther away cannot be as complex or detailed as illusions that are close to her, and they require more focus to maintain. Madeline can see through her own illusions, and can give others this same ability while touching them. Her illusions will show up on cameras and sound recording devices; they actually generate light and sound. Someone immune to magic or mental effects will still be able to see and hear them them, though they would not be able to feel them, and they may not be as convincing.

History:
Madeline grew up in a rural southern town with fairly religious parents. As a baby, she cried during her baptism and got a terrible rash afterwards. As she grew up, she became increasingly averse to going to church. When she was nine years old she sprouted horns and her powers began to manifest. Her parents assumed she was struggling with some kind of mental illness giving her delusions. It wasn't until she had an episode of involuntarily floating off the ground that her parents became Awakened.

After learning that their daughter was an actual, literal demon, they kicked her out. Fortunately for Madeline, she had an aunt who was already awakened and was more accepting of Madeline's otherworldly nature. Madeline gave her a tearful phone call, and she got on the next plane down to where Madeline was staying. When the dust had settled, Madeline had a new home in Polaris Pass with her aunt. She has grown up there since, attending the private school where her aunt taught.

additional info: Her 'sin eater' thing is entirely undiagnosed.
She did fencing for a few years after her sword manifested, but no longer goes to competitions.

Light Control - Glint can create and control light within a range of 20 meters. This allows him to create purely visual illusions. He can also focus light or emit a laser with enough intensity to cause burns or ignite flammable objects. Finally, he could completely blot out all light in his range if he wanted to. His power can affect light outside the visible spectrum for humans, including infrared and ultraviolet.

Glint's father was a demon lord who went by "Luster Brilliance." Luster was an erratic, paranoid lord who sometimes exercised great cruelty over his subjects over real or imagined grievances. He also imprisoned Glint and his siblings for much of their lives, out of fear that one of them would try to overthrow him. Because of his imprisonment, Glint has begun plotting to overthrow him.

After escaping his imprisonment, Glint has been sighted in Chloe Black's kingdom in hell, occasionally even meeting with the queen herself. He has since used some of his personal wealth to secure passage to Earth and get a place to live there.

Heathcliff suffered from a terrible tragedy on the day of his birth. His parents named him 'Heathcliff." He still bears the scars from this.Aside from that, he's lived a pretty normal life. He was born an only child, and continues to be one.

His father saw an opportunity over a decade ago to quit his office job and take over a car dealership outside of Polaris Pass; thanks in part to his business acumen and incredible luck, he's done pretty well for himself. His family, including Heathcliff, had to move out to Polaris Pass with him.

By now, Heathcliff has started attending Cordelia S. Moore high school.

History:
- Lived more than 13 years as a normal cat owned by a single woman in Polaris Pass
- Started being a magical cat boy capable of speech one day. He awakened his owner, Samantha, soon after.
- Owner's awakened friends helped her figure things out. She was very shaken, but eventually chose to keep Jasper as her child rather than her pet, after receiving help with the paperwork
- After being told he was a girl, decided that this was Incorrect, actually. He recently started getting affirming care from a clinic in Salem.
- Will likely be getting a True North scholarship for being a menace with his powers and Simply Not Caring about the veil

Trait One: Prickly - Jean has a tendency towards being (or appearing to be) cynical about most people. Some people think she likes her plants more than most humans.
Trait Two: Sassy - Jean can be sarcastic, and sometimes even impudent if she knows she can get away with it.
Trait Three: Secretly, a heart of gold - She likes helping people, but she's loathe to admit it.

Additional Information: She can be very petty. She's been known to use minor fate magic to prank people. Her demeanor tends towards tired and dry.

Minor magic: teas or salves that can mimic positive effects of over the counter meds and some prescription drugs
Minor condition: Sacrifice - some herbs Jean has prepared are destroyed to make a tea or salve. They can also be used as ingredients in a baked treat.
Major magic: A salve that makes an injury heal ten times as fast. A cookie that compels honesty for half an hour when eaten.
Major Condition: Time-consuming - Jean spends thirty minutes to an hour preparing what she needs.
Momentous Magic: A tincture to turn someone into a small animal or a big monster. Lift or weaken a magic curse. Temporarily (or on rare, unexpected occasions, permanently) remove a disadvantage or add/improve an advantage.
Momentous Condition: Focus AND extra time-consuming - she needs to be in her kitchen, specifically, and it will take at least a couple of hours to make 1 serving.

Type of magic: Fate Magic
Minor magic: Her target suffers a minor inconvenience or stroke of luck. They might stub their toe, get a papercut, or trip over something. They might find a lucky penny or stumble upon something misplaced.
Minor condition: Gesture - a wave of the hand, a wiggle of the fingers, pointing at someone - the gestures are different for each kind of effect she tries to achieve
Major magic: a substantial stroke of good or bad luck, eg: guns misfire or jam, target falls down a flight of stairs, target gets home safe driving drunk.
Major Condition: Recharge - she can't use luck magic or telekinesis for 3 hours
Momentous Magic: Jean's target is cursed to suffer a tragedy or experiences severely bad luck. Or, an extraordinary opportunity will fall into her target's lap. Jean cannot control the finer details, only whether the spell is a blessing or a curse.
Momentous Condition: Patience - the spell takes about a month to bear fruit. (Furthermore, someone can only have one such blessing or curse)

Core Advantage:
Jean is attuned to knowledge that the limitations of space and time should deny her. This manifests in a handful of ways, including:
  • She always knows when someone is trying to contact her, and about what. If you knock on her door, call, or text, she'll know who you are and why you're doing this without looking.
  • She knows when someone she cares about is in danger, and she has an intuitive sense of when danger is approaching or when terrible things have happened.
  • She regularly has prophetic dreams. Important facts about the future sometimes come to her through a filter of symbolism, which she can translate at least 70% accurately.
  • Looking into her crystal ball, she can see visions of someone she's thinking about. These visions can be from the past, present, or future, and she can't control which.
  • Uncanny intuition about others' motives.

Nerfs and Flavor:
  • the products of Jean's magical herbalism have short shelf-lives. The products of major or momentous magics can only be stored for 3 days at the longest before they lose their potency. Minor remedies can last a week.
  • If the same person is exposed to more than one instance of momentous magical herbalism in a day, weird things can happen. This usually isn't a good thing for anyone involved.
  • Jean has limited control over the actual effects of her fate magic. It often does things she doesn't expect.
  • She can't use fate magic on a game of chance she'll personally profit from.
  • To undo her own momentous fate spells, she must use momentous magical herbalism.

History:
  • Grew up in a small town. Was the family black sheep, only partly because her powers began to manifest when she was a teenager
  • Her ex-girlfriend, who she met in college, introduced her to the broader supernatural world. Jean could already perceive the supernatural at the time but didnt know how to approach it
  • Started getting into herbalism, and her intuition and visions guided her in developing the mystical practices she's capable of drawing on today.
  • She tried to make money off these powers by pretending to be a naturopath at one point. While this was very lucrative for a couple of years, and she did help a few people, she found that trying to replicate her ability at scale for profit was spiritually damaging to her. No amount of people she healed cold shake off her sense that her work was harming the world in some way. She quit just as she was making it big.
  • was able to draw on her math minor and connections with old friends to move on to math teaching, which she's been doing at True North for over a decade now.
  • Took in her niece Madeline after Jean's sister and brother-in-law disowned the kid.
