Community Poll: AI-Generated Art

Good morning Starlit Avenue! We're here with a community poll regarding a topic that ha recently become pretty active in our community: AI-generated art.

This is art that, rather than being drawn from scratch by a human artist, is created using an algorithmic program. The backend computing aspects of that process are honestly too complicated to get into in this post. But if you've ever used a web application like ArtBreeder or NovelAI, that's a good example of exactly what I'm talking about.

There's some controversy surrounding the idea of AI-generated art right now: ranging from concerns of how it affects the livilihood of human artists to the ways in which these programs utilize existing art without the permission of the artists whose work they train the AI with. It's a hotbed of philosophical, legal, and ethical topics.

As it stands, some members of our community have begun using this art with the intention of making visual representations of their characters. Some other members have expressed concerns with the use of AI-generated art for various reasons. Right now, what we want is to establish how the community broadly wants to handle this type of art.

You can find a quick two question poll HERE. I'll collect data over the next few days and, if we have interesting points of discussion, I'll open those up to a round table with the community. In the meantime, you'll find that I've created a new channel in the Discord server called #ai-art. Please sequester any AI-generated art and discussion of such there until we have a more solid handle on what the community wants.

Hi SA-ians, we've looked over everyone's opinions, and the general feelings of the site from the poll, and come to a conclusion:

We aren't going to ban AI art. We already require attribution, so that will remain as is, and we'll also be adding a dedicated AI-art channel on discord - if for no other reason then because there are often multiple versions that can get very spammy.

Our reasons are fairly simple:
- SA is not an art site. We an RP site that is art-positive, but art used on SA is not being posted for it's own sake; it's illustrative.
- There is absolutely no official consensus. Even among people with the same opinion about it's use, their reasonings were very different. Legally, there is definitely no consensus.
- We have had players using AI art on the site for more than a year. Many characters are firmly established with AI art images.
- We are actually seeing LESS AI art usage on the site than we have in the past. It is absolutely not going to be the majority of character images.
- We have always had to balance usability with the rights of the artist; picrew has been a major turning point, but does not cover all character types. SA's art usage rules are a world more strict than most roleplay sites.
- We are open to updating art usage rules if people wish, but we have to balance the different types of people in our player base, and their different wishes and needs.
