Happy Holidays, Polaris Pass!
Every year in Polaris Pass, the day after Thanksgiving isn't hallmarked by Black Friday deals, but by the annual Autumn Potluck. Repurposed Thanksgiving leftovers along with traditional Fall treats made just for the occasion become the focus of the town's real holiday of the season. Mainstreet takes on the role of impromptu festival grounds, with police blocking off a good two blocks worth of shops to vehicle traffic. Tables come out and musicians take to the streets to entertain locals and visiting tourists alike as people wander around to eat, socialize, and enjoy another excuse to take the day off from school and work.
The real fun comes from the scarecrow competition though. Dozens of scarecrows, some sponsored by local business and some made by individual residents line Mainstreet like a whimsical, slightly creepy march of straw and secondhand clothes. No one can tell you for sure where the tradition of making scarecrows came from, since Polaris Pass was never really a farming town. That doesn't stop wild theories and stories from spreading every year. But it's good fun to be had by all, seeing the creativity of the locals at work. Festival goers can vote for the one they like best by putting a marble into a bucket at the feet of each scarecrow. At the end of the festival, the scarecrow with the most marbles is declared the Polaris Pass Spirit of Autumn, and will be displayed on the front lawn of Town Hall until the first day of Winter.
