Personality

Soft: Michiko is squishy in most ways a person can be. She is soft-spoken, with a gentle touch and a propensity against swearing when she can help it (no judgment, it just… feels icky when she says it!). Michiko also refuses to acknowledge her own backbone until she’s absolutely forced to do so, and tends to be a deferential person in general. She keeps her head down and does what she’s supposed to do.

Good Friend: Michi is nothing if not loyal. It’s a trait that’s become deeply ingrained in her. Despite being on the friendly side, she can be a bit slow to really trust and welcome a new person into her life, but when she gives her loyalty it’s forever (for better or for worse). More than this, though, Michiko is just… a good, kind person. She gives what she can, when she can, and does her best to really understand others’ perspectives. Her empathy is both her superpower and her kryptonite, as the same quality that makes her a safe landing place, also leaves her easy to walk all over in the end.

Creative Expressionist: Michiko keeps a lot of her feelings close to her chest, at least when it comes to communicating them outright. However, she more easily expresses herself through creative pursuits such as poetry, art, music, and dance. She’s always had an affinity for the humanities, dance in particular, and wishes there was more money in them.

Additional Information
Michi has led a pretty solitary life, socially. To compensate, she’s developed a lot of hobbies. These include poetry, piano, dance(!!), and painting. She also dabbles in things like jewelry making, crocheting, and archery, plus (modest) gaming (but wouldn’t list it as a hobby if asked—it’s rare she can find the time). Michiko also quite loves to hike, but hasn’t had a partner in a long while. Hiking alone scares her, so she doesn’t often get to go.

Current Situation

Occupation
College 3rd year at Portland State University, transferring to Olcott for summer courses. Studying English (formerly dance) with a minor in Japanese.
Housing
Lives in a small but relatively cozy downtown apartment with boyfriend Jeremy Knox

Money is tight, but they’re okay due to her family’s support for tuition.

History

Date of Birth
March 3rd
Place of Birth
Ayase, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan
Michiko’s father, Thomas, enlisted in the US Navy at 18. He spent several years training and traveling before being stationed in Japan for a 3-year stay. He met his wife-to-be, Aiko, there. They married and had Michiko, then left Japan together a year later (age 1).

The small family moved around a fair bit over the years. Iceland (1-4); Naples, Italy (4-7); Hawaii (7-10); the Philippines (10-13). Michiko’s brother, Kenny, was born in Naples (age 5). Her little sister, Hanane, was born in Hawaii about 3 years later (age 8).

It was about a year after they got stationed in Everett, Washington — Michiko was 14 — when her mother suddenly passed away. It rocked the family completely, with Michiko stepping up as a pseudo-matriarch of the household for a year, until age 15. Things were… hard. Her father worked long hours & sometimes turned to drink when he was home. He wasted little time in “befriending” other women in his grief.

However, when Michiko was 15, her father suddenly committed to retiring & married Michiko’s stepmother, Grayce. He believed it was necessary to ensure his children “had a mother,” and believed ending their life of travel would be best to promote stability in the household.

Grayce… probably meant well. Michiko believes that. But the dynamic her — and her own children’s — presence created in their life was anything but stable. More often than not, Michiko began to feel incredibly alienated within her own home, as she was the only child Grayce couldn’t mold completely to her image. She just… did her best to fly under the radar, hoping that doing so could instill peace into their broken home. It never really got better.

For Michiko, leaving for college was bittersweet. Worried for her brothers, she didn’t dare go too far away, but staying too close to home was no longer an option due to Grayce. She enrolled in Portland State University, but it quickly proved lonely. Her brothers didn’t need her, and her shy demeanor made it difficult to make friends. Luckily, a chance encounter with a friend-of-a-friend led her to meeting college senior Jeremy Knox in February, and the two quickly fell in love.

Jeremy graduated and stayed close in Portland, beginning work for a tech firm. However, when his job offered him a promotion — opening their new satellite location in Polaris Pass — he couldn’t reasonably decline. So Michiko switched to online coursework and the two moved out to Polaris.

In Summer, Michiko will transfer to Olcott University, and the she will finally live happily ever after.

She just knows it.
