Diego is originally a character from a game.
The game he is from was created by an amateur game programmer and was never really meant for public consumption. The game is a simple heroes vs. villains turn-based RPG named "Within Us", with simple fight mechanics, scenes and some dialogue options, and few different possible endings depending on the options you picked.
In the game, Diego is a Mexican youth from an impoverished background. His brief backstory states, that after his father killed his mother and tried to kill him, he awakened in his superpowers of flight and superspeed. He used said powers to kill his father in self-defence. After that he joined the local supervillain gang and worked as their goon, slowly climbing the ranks. He was a low-level boss, used soon after the tutorial to test if the player learned all they needed to play the game.
The game developer who made Diego's game landed a job at a big company named Peak Productions and as her first project she decided to polish and improve Within Us and try to pitch it to the producers. She worked on it for months on the side, and when she pitched it it was put in development. Unfortunately, the game was abandoned after 6 months and it was forgotten and files relating to it buried deep inside the company's servers. Few months after Within Us was dropped Peak Productions filed for bankruptcy, and although most of its other files were deleted, Within Us managed to slip through and remained on the servers even after a new company started using them.
After many years, in 2023, a strange thing occurred. The company that now used Peak Productions' old servers was attacked by a strange virus, that caused an energy surge to go through the building at night. Power went out for several hours, and then returned on its own by dawn. When the first workers entered the building in the morning they heard strange sounds from the server room. They went to investigate, and when they opened the door Diego burst out. He ran past the workers and out onto the street, and once he got there he simply took flight. Several people saw him take off and disappear onto the roof of a nearby tall building.
Diego, now in the real world and confused by everything around him, spent few days just sitting on that roof and trying to gather his thoughts. That didn't do him much good, so in the end he decided to just...fly and see where the wind took him.
Diego flew for almost 12 hours straight, before the hunger and stress and sleep deprivation finally got to him. He was able to land himself safely, right on the outskirts of Polaris Pass.
