Spellcasting

  • Spellcasting is a unique mechanic that stands separate from the trait system.

By giving up 3 advantages from your normal 9 limit, you can take one style of magic, also called a 'spellcasting theme'. You can do this up to three times, which would leave you with no advantages, but three types of magic.

You would list each of your spellcasting themes in your Advantages section like so:

    Spellcasting Theme: Weather Wizard

There are no lists of spells. Whatever makes sense for the theme. Please keep the general principles in mind however:
    • Any action that has a simple mundane equivalent (such as lighting a candle with a small magical spark vs. a butane lighter) is fine as long as it makes sense with the theme.

    • Magic does have a cost however. As the effect becomes more potent, the cost (time, energy, resources, etc.) becomes even greater.

    • No character should be able to solve broad problems within the setting with magic. Your character may, for example, be able to magically generate food within a specific story context. Doing so on a large enough scale to effectively remove food as a source of potential issue for everyone in the setting is not allowed. Use your best judgement.

Below are some common costs that you can associate with your character's spellcasting, to help guide you along.
    • Focus Implement - The user requires some kind of object to act as a focus for their spells. If this object is taken or unavailable, they cannot perform the levels of magic that require it.

    • Gestures - The user must act out physical motions and gestures while performing their magic.

    • Group Effort - Spells with this requirement need multiple spellcasters working together to make it work.

    • Incantation - The user must speak specific phrases while performing their magic to make it work.

    • Patience - The spell will not take place immediately, as the energy takes time to build up and release.

    • Sacrifice - Spells that require some kind of destruction, such as bloodletting, the killing of a living creature, or the destruction of objects.
