Samantha's family is Korean on father's side and Japanese on her mother's. Both of them are well-educated professionals. Her older brother became a doctor. She dropped out near the start of her third semester at Duke University, and later moved to Polaris Pass to get away from her family. They let her bring her cat, Jasper, since that pet had mostly been her responsibility since she was a kid.
Years later, her cat Jasper started talking to her. And informed her that he was actually a boy. And turned into a catboy. And set part of her old apartment on fire to make her recognize that he was, in fact, a magic talking cat, which is a real thing that it's possible to be. Since then, she's been becoming more and more aware of the supernatural - like apparently that couple she works for at this italian restaurant are wizards? With their help, and the help of other local supernaturals, she got help getting Jasper set up at True North, and got the state of Oregon to believe that she's Jasper's foster mother now.
She wasn't really ready to be a single mom, but she's doing her best. She still loves Jasper. It's just becoming a little hard not to lose her mind now that she knows reality is fake.
